I have been learning so much about nutrition over the past year, and hope to incorporate more nutritional tips on my blog. This has been one of my favorite healthy ideas. This is a 'brain power' mix and has a perfect ratio of omega 3, 6 and 9.
Flax seed
Sunflower seed
Sesame seed
Pumpkin seed
Use a coffee grinder to grind the seeds into a fine powder. Use 50% flax seeds to 50% sunflower/sesame/pumpkin seeds. Sprinkle a heaping tablespoon into your morning cereal, oatmeal, or smoothie. Not only is this going to give you a great balance of the essential fatty acids, but it will give you a great kick of protein to keep you feeling full throughout the morning.
Whats the big deal about Omega-3 anyway?
This is an essential fatty acid because they are necessary for human health but the body can' t make them so you have to get them through food. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, some plants, and nut oils. These polyunsaturated fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development. They are great for the heart and have shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. It is also beneficial for mood balance, weight loss and reduces inflammation.
Omega 6 are also important for body function, however we get a LOT more Omega 6 in the American diet then we do the omega 3. Most Americans have a ratio of 1 omega 3 to 20 omega 6. The ideal ratio is closer to 1:2.
So hit up the bulk section at the grocery store and try this combo! Be sure to get plain seeds with no added salt. Enjoy!
So 50% is flax seed and then split the other 50% between the other ingredients? I'm gonna try it!
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly right. Let me know how you like it!
